Obituary

Nancy Caroline Kyle was born in Miami county, Ohio, October 23d, 1830, and died at her home, four miles north of Winterset, Iowa, February 7th, 1898, age 67 years, 3 months and 14 days.

Her parents were Kentuckians and when they moved to Ohio the estate coming to them by inheritance included a large number of slaves. Her father, Rev. Samuel Kyle, a minister of the Christian church, had very pronounced views against dealing in human chattels and expressed his convictions in a public manner. To the surprise of his friends, when the estate was settled he refused the money for his portion of the slaves, and took them with him to the northern states. As soon as he crossed the border he gave each a paper of freedom. This was the spirit of her early instruction—freedom in its fullest noblest sense.

November 12th, 1863, she married a returned Union soldier, J. J. Furrow, who survives her. To them were born six children. Three sons are living. In 1866 they moved to Iowa. In November 1880, their residence was burned in the night, and their daughters, aged respectfully, 17, 12 and 9 years, who were sleeping up stairs were burned to death. This was a terrible blow, and nothing but an unfaltering trust in the Divine power sustained the afflicted mother in her trial. The deceased united with the Christian church at Cove Springs, Ohio, when only 12 years old and Rev. McMillan, our veteran preacher, was her early pastor. She has ever remained a faithful, consistent member—holding her membership in Ohio, Tama county, Iowa, and Winterset. All who knew her felt impressed by her earnest Christian life and she leaves a ray of light to guide those who follow.

The funeral services were held at the Christian church, Tuesday at eleven o’clock, conducted by Rev. Follansbee, assisted by Revs. McMillan and Stores.

Note: Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
