Mrs. Mary Boyd of Jackson township was Centenarian; Born in County Down, Ireland in 1808

Mary Henry Boyd passed away on Sunday, at her home in Jackson township, after an illness of two days.

Mrs. Boyd was permitted to enjoy life in full possession of all her faculties to a remarkably old age. She was by several years the oldest person in Madison county. The exact date of her birth is not on record but she first saw the light of day in County Down, Ireland in 1808.

She was married to David Boyd in the same place in 1852. In 1870, Mr. and Mrs. Boyd emigrated to New York and in 1888 to Madison county, Iowa. Mr. Boyd preceded her to the better world, January 22 1891.

To them were born three children, one son, who died at two years of age and two daughters, Mrs. Lizzie Mairs, of Ohio township and Miss Mary Boyd, of Jackson township.

Mrs. Boyd was of strong religious faith and united with the Presbytarian church in 1842 and lived until her death a life consistant with her profession. Her funeral services were held on Monday at 3 p.m. from the United Presbyterian church at Pitzer, conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. E. Barr.

Death of a Centennarian.

The oldest citizen of Madison county was laid to rest Monday, August 3rd, in the cemetery near Pitzer.

Mrs. Mary Boyd, who has resided in the Pitzer community for more than twenty years, was taken seriously ill Thursday, July 30th and passed away Sabbath, August 2nd, at three o’clock. The funeral service was held Monday at three o’clock in the U. P. church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. E. Barr.

Mrs. Boyd, whose maiden name was Henery, was born in Down county, Ireland, in 1808. She was married in 1832 to David Boyd. Three children were born to them, a son, who died in infancy, and two daughters, Mrs. Jane Eliza Mairs, of St. Charles, and Mary Ann Boyd, of Pitzer. Together with her family she emigrated to America in 1870 and settled at York, N.Y., coming to her late home in this county in 1888.

At the time of her death she had completed one hundred years, an age that few can hope to reach. During most of her time she enjoyed good health and only during the last two or three months has she been growing more feeble.

She has been a faithful member of the church since 1843 when she united in her native land. At the time of her death she was a member of the Pitzer congregation.

The friends who mourn her departure have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community.
