LUCILE MARTENS, WINTERSET

Lucile Hazel Martens, 91, of Winterset died Aug. 22, 2008, at West Bridge Care & Rehabilitation in Winterset.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 26, at Ochiltree Funeral Service in Winterset. Burial was at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines. Memorials may be directed to the John Wayne Birthplace in Winterset.

Lucile Martens was born April 13, 1917, in Madison County to William Oscar and Cassie (Hess) Ogburn. She was a graduate of Winterset Community School and taught for several years in country schools in Madison County. Her marriage to Irvin Martens took place June 20, 1943, in West Des Moines. Following their marriage, they resided in Baltimore, Md., while Irvin served in the United States Army.

Following his discharge from the service, they returned to Iowa and settled on a farm north of Winterset. For many years, Lucile owned and ran the H & R Block office in Winterset. She also was active in Tri-L Club, Tuesday Club, Lakeview Country Club and the Madison County Republicans and served on the boards of Madison County Memorial Hospital as well as the Winterset Library. She helped start the John Wayne Memorials through the Tri-L Club and Lucile and Irvin were part of the original Covered Bridge Committee. In 1997, she and her husband moved to Lakeland, Fla., where they were members of the Faith Lutheran Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband and a sister, Maxine Foland.

She is survived by a brother-in-law, Frank Foland, and a sister-in-law, Gladys Martens.
