Earlham Echo – March 1, 1962

Obituary

Effie Jane Libby, the daughter of William and Rachel Bigwood, was born at Rockville, Indiana, April 2, 1876, and passed from this life at the Earlham Parkview Home on February 13, 1962, at the age of 85 years.

She was married on March 12, 1902 at Earlham, Iowa to Frank R. Libby, who preceded her in death on July 20, 1955.

They made their home from 1905 to 1943 in Valley Junction, Iowa, (now West Des Moines). Moving back to Earlham, they spent the remainder of their years here.

She and her husband observed their fiftieth wedding anniversary in 1952 with a reception in the Friends Church.

Effie was a member of the Earlham Friends Church, and though unable to attend regularly, she maintained an active interest in, and concern for the work and life of the church. She took a leading part in the weekly Sunday School class held by the ladies of the Parkview Home.

Her unfailing good humor, and her kindly and generous spirit endeared her to all who knew her. Her hands were always busy making beautiful garments and other artistic and useful articles for her family and friends and those in need. One of her last generous acts was the gift of a blanket to the church for its relief work among Algerian refugees.

She is survived by two sons, Lyman J. of Chicago, Illinois, and Lester B. of Des Moines, Iowa, and a daughter, Wilma Doherty of Clearwater, Florida. She leaves, also, two sisters, Madge Wolfrom of Los Angeles, California, and Maryanna Libby of West Des Moines; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, and many, many friends.

The funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon, February 15, at the Earlham Friends Church, with the pastor L. Willard Reynolds conducting the service. Gertrude Conrad was pianist, and a men’s quartette sang. Burial was in the Earlham cemetery.
