October 21, 1897Mrs. Clearwater’s Death.
Last week just before the REPORTER went to press, as noticed in a two-line local, Mrs. John Clearwater, of this city, dropped dead in the yard at her home. At the time of her death her husband was in southwestern Missouri, seventy miles from a railroad, and it was impossible to get him home even for the funeral, which occurred Friday at the residence, conducted by Rev. Jacobs. Deceased was a lady 53 years old and the mother of five boys, all living. She had been in poor health for some time, but death was not expected to come so suddenly as it did. Heart trouble was the immediate cause of her demise.

On Tuesday, October 13, at about 1 o'clock Mrs. J.S. Clearwater, while in the back yard and but a few feet from the house, which is located just north of the old Baptist church, was seen by people passing in that part of the city to fall suddenly to the ground. A [group] of people immediately rushed to see what the matter could be and to their surprise they found her lifeless. A physician was immediately summoned and he found life extinct and pronounced it a case of heart disease. Mrs. Clearwater had been in poor health for a number of years but her condition was not considered critical.
The deceased was born in Stubenville, Ohio, February 1, 1846. She came with her family to Iowa, and first located at Knoxville. In 1870 she located at Winterset where she resided until her demise. She was the mother of five children, all boys, who reside in this city with one exception, William Clearwater, who lives in Des Moines. Mr. Clearwater has been absent from the home for a number of months in southwest Missouri and was unable to be present at the funeral.
The funeral services were conducted at the residence Friday, Rev. Riledaffer of the Methodist church officiating. The remains were followed to their last resting place in Rock City cemetery by a large concourse of relatives and friends.
