Chips and Whetstones

A very sad accident happened last Thursday in Walnut township, as a result of which Mrs. Jennie Merrell lost her life. She was out riding with her mother, Mrs. Alex Macumber, sitting on the back seat of a surrey with her six-months-old babe. The horse became frightened, but before it had hardly made a move Mrs. Merrell alighted from the buggy with her babe, frightened almost to frenzy. She swooned and fell and was taken to the home of George Ergenbright near by, where she died in a few moments. We understand she was subject to heart trouble and the scare was too much for her to endure. She leaves a husband and three children to mourn her loss. The remains were interred in the Clark cemetery Friday.

The saddest event that has ever occurred in our vicinity was the death of Mrs. Fred Murrell on last Thursday. She, in company with her mother and little two-year-old daughter, went out to take a ride. They came to a ditch in the road near the residence of P. C. Boling. One of the horses reared up and did not want to cross. She got out and took the child out of the buggy and her mother was going to turn them around. Elmer Ergenbright was working near by and she waved to him come and help them, which she did as quickly as possible. While he was coming she crossed a little ditch with the child in her arms and sat down on the bank. She told her mother she felt sick and began spitting blood.

Elmer helped her into the buggy and drove to his father’s house about a quarter of a mile away and helped her to the house. She asked for a drink of water and then lay down on the bed and died almost instantly. The doctors claim that the bursting of a blood vessel was the cause of her death.

She was the only child of Alex Macumber, was married about three and a half years ago to Fred Murrell, of Minnesota. She leaves a husband and three children to mourn her loss. The family have the deepest sympathy of the entire community.
