GEORGE W. BOWLES

George W. Bowles was born Sept 11, 1856 on a farm which is now within the city limits of Des Moines. He died at his home May 24, 1908, at the age of 51 years 3 months 13 days.

His mother died when he was fourteen years old and his father in 1884. He was married to Minnie M. Jacobs in 1881, moving to Madison county in 1886 having lived on his present farm, three miles north of Barney, for 21 years. To them was born one daughter, Georgie Edith, who with her mother mourns the father's death. He also leaves five half brothers and two half sisters, who always had a true brotherly love for him. They are all living, three of the brothers and one sister being present at the funeral.

The whole community speak highly of him as a citizen and remember him as a uniformly kind neighbor. He was a faithful, loving husband, and one of the best of fathers. Although he never united with the church, yet he was a student of the bible, believing in the vital reality of its teachings and encouraging his family in their christian living. During his last sickness he fully yielded to Christ and would have been buried with him in baptism if he had felt able. He calmly and with perfect reconciliation placed his life in God's hands, expressing a willingness that the heavenly Father's will should be done, only wishing to be spared that he might serve his loved ones.

His mind was clear to the last and he prepared to leave as one starting on a pleasant journey. He gave full instructions about his business affairs, had friends and a member of the choir come in to sing and made all the arrangements for the funeral service. The departure of such a manner is beautiful and in harmony with the Christian's hope. The influence of his life will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
