Obituary

Sylvia Julia Shadley was born in Havre, France, September 17th, 1843, and passed peacefully away last Sunday morning, May 23d, aged 65 years and 7 months.

With her parents she came to this country when seven years of age. Her mother, brother and sister died in New Orleans shortly after arriving in America. The family settled in Ohio and in 1857 came to Winterset, Iowa. On December 25th, 1862, she was united in marriage with Alden Baker Smith, and of this union six children were born, Harry Alden, who died January 26, 1890; Sylvia Grace, now Mrs. Null; Jennie Mabel, who died August 24, 1884; David Warren, of this city; Elsie Louise, now Mrs. Bert Benge; Julia Ethel, now Mrs. Albert Payton of Sioux City; Alden Baker Smith died March 31st, 1879. Besides her children she is survived by one brother, John Shadley of Des Moines.

With her husband and son she united with the First Presbyterian Church of this city February 10th, 1878, and has always been a faithful member, taking a great interest in the Missionary Society and all branches of church work. She was a charter member of the Eastern Star.

During her long residence in this city she won a host of friends. Many of them have preceded her to the other shore and have bid her welcome home. She showed the greatest of patience and fortitude while her last long illness shut her out from friends and the world of activities to which she had always been used.

She was prepared for Eternity and was ready and willing to go when the Master called.

Sylvia J. Smith

Mrs. Sylvia J. Smith, whose death occurred last Sunday morning the 23d, and whose obituary appears elsewhere in this issue, was another of the notable matrons of Winterset whose life went back to the pioneer days when good women were a large factor in the building up of the community. She was one of the leaders in the social fabric of Winterset all her life until she became a shut-in through the ravages of disease a few years ago. She was the mother of six children and there never was a more devoted mother or a happier family. By the death of her husband which occurred while the children were yet young her responsibilities greatly multiplied, but her strong character, mother love and devotion sustained her and she lived to see her remaining children grow to a useful man and womanhood, living the lives she had designed for them and to which she had guided them. Hers was a life of accomplishment and she has gone to her reward.

Note: Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
