NORMAN BARKER, South Carolina

Norman L. Barker, 89, of Hartsville, S.C., and formerly of Lorimor and Winterset, died May 9, 2008.

Funeral services were held today, Wednesday, May 14, at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset. Burial was at Lorimor Cemetery with military honors performed by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8142 and American Legion Post 184, both of Winterset. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Lorimor Baptist Church or the Salvation Army.

Norman Barker was born July 27, 1918, in Fort Dodge to Leon LeRoy and Ethel Viola (Adams) Barker. After his schooling, he served in the United States Army during World War II.

His marriage to Wilma Thurman took place June 29, 1939, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Together, with their family, they resided in Union County until 1954, when they moved to Winterset. Norman was a self-employed businessman in Lorimor and Winterset. Following retirement, he and Wilma moved to South Carolina. He was a member of the Masons.

He was preceded in death by his wife; a sister, Mildred; and a great-grandson, Cory Bell.

He is survived by his children, Phyllis Morrissey of Carmel, Ind., Gary Barker of Hartsville, S.C., and Patti Boggess of Newton; and 20 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Norman L. Barker, 89, of Hartsville, South Carolina and formerly of Lorimor and Winterset died Friday, May 9, 2008, in Hartsville.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at Ochiltree Funeral Service and Aftercare in Winterset. A visitation with family will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, May 13, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Lorimor Cemetery in Lorimor.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Lorimor Baptist Church and the Salvation Army.

He is survived by his children, Phyllis Morrissey (Larry) of Carmel, IN, Gary Barker (Patricia) of Hartsville, SC and Patti Boggess (Richard) of Newton; 20 grandchildren; and twelve great- grandchildren.
