ALBERTA ALICE TURLEY, Winterset

Our beloved mother, Alberta Alice Turley, 91, passed from this life peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, April 27, 2008 at her daughter's home in Chugiak, Alaska. Alberta was born on September 17, 1916 in Winterset, Iowa to Cecil O. Sanders and Millie B. Brown. Alberta attended school in Winterset, Iowa and was a avid tennis player in her high school years. She was known for her genuine smile and for the kindness she showed to everyone that she met.

During her teenage years, Alberta worked at the local drug store in Winterset. As an adult, Alberta, worked for Dial Finance in Des Moines, Iowa; Shell Oil Company in Ventura, CA, during World War II; Look Magazine in Des Moines, Iowa; Fuller Petroleum Services in Adel, Iowa; and Bentler's and Kelly's Truck Stop in the Earlham-De Soto area.

Alberta married Cecil D. Turley on September 6, 1945 in Ventura, California and returned to live in Booneville, Iowa for a number of years. They had six children. Alberta enjoyed cooking, gardening, reading, needlework, word puzzles, and watching Lawrence Welk and Wheel of Fortune.

For the last two years, she lived in Chugiak, Alaska with her daughter and son-in-law, Doug and Patty Herring. While living in Alaska, she enjoyed the sunsets in Homer Alaska, camping trips with her family, and following the famous Iditarod Dog Sled Race.

Alberta is survived by her daughter Patty (Doug) Herring of Chugiak, AK.; her sons Jim of Eldridge, Iowa; Mike of Santa Rosa, CA; Stephen of Urbandale, Iowa; and Doug (Laura) of Boulder CO. She took great delight in her three grandchildren, Jamie Turley-Anderson of Valencia,CA, Dana Herring of Washington D.C., and Victoria Turley of Eldridge, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, her sisters Gladys Wools and Lela Lucas, her husband, Cecil, and her son, Charles Turley.

She was our rock, our inspiration, and our biggest fan. She will be greatly missed, but her warm smile, kind demeanor, and loving nature will live forever in our hearts.

Per Alberta's request her body will be cremated and services will be at a later date in Winterset, Iowa. Memorial contributions may be made to the Des Moines Botanical Center, Des Moines, Iowa.
