Elaine Marie Heckman, 67, of Peru, Iowa (formerly of Dexter) passed away May 5, 2008 at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Thursday May 8, 2008 at the All Saints Catholic Church - Stuart, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Johnson Family Funeral Home where a Vigil Service will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Burial will follow services in Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the family and/or Truro Fire and Rescue Department and/or All Saints Catholic Church.
Elaine was born April 4, 1941 in Iowa City, Iowa to Sherman King and Hazel Graves King Bender. Her father passed away at an early age and her mother married Orville Bender. As a child she lived in Perry and Arkansas before moving back to Iowa making their home in Adel.
Elaine was united in marriage to Errol Heckman on June 6, 1959 at the Panther Creek Church in rural Dallas County. Together the made their home for 38 years northwest of Dexter. Elaine was a homemaker and enjoyed helping Errol on the farm and raising her children. Elaine also was an avid seamstress throughout her life. She was a member of the All Saints Catholic Church. Elaine enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking, china and pen painting, reading, all sorts of sewing, playing the piano and spending time with her family especially her grandchildren.
Preceding her in death is her father, Sherman King, mother, and step-father, Hazel and Orville Bender, step-sister, Betty Farris, step-brother, Harold King, mother and father-in-law, Gerald and Leona Heckman, brother-in-laws, Donnie Terwilliger and Dean Shelley.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her beloved husband, Errol Heckman of the home, daughter, Lorre Jones (Kenny) of Guthrie Center, Iowa; son, Dwayne Heckman (Lavenia) of Mitchellville, Iowa; brother, Dennis Payton of Bridgeport, Texas; sister, Phyllis Terwilliger, Big Flats, New York; grandchildren, Joshua and David Heckman of Mitchellville and Todd and Shannon Jones of Guthrie Center; sister-in-law, Vera Shelley of Menlo; sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy Kopaska (Ernie) of Dexter; brother and sister-in-law, Glen Heckman (Kathy) of Osceola; cousins, Shirley Pirillo (Jim) of Des Moines, Maxine Burke, Des Moines and Helen Brock of McAllen, Texas; special friends, Richard Dingman (Joan) of Rogers, Arkansas and a host of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and friends all of whom will miss her greatly.
