PHIL ARMSTRONG, DES MOINES

Phil R. Armstrong, 77, of Des Moines and formerly of St. Charles, died of congestive heart failure March 28, 2008, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center.

Funeral services were held today (Wednesday, April 2) at Grace United Methodist Church. Burial was at Glendale Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to Grace United Methodist Church, Camp Hantesa, or the Humane Society of Winterset. Arrangements were handled by Westover Funeral Home, Des Moines.

Phil Armstrong was born in Des Moines and lived most of his life between Des Moines and St. Charles. He graduated from Perkins Elementary School, Roosevelt High School and Capital City Commercial College. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in the Korean War. His memberships included Grace United Methodist Church, Lions Club, and the Izaak Walton League. Phil’s career began with Timmerwilke Brokerage, which later became Armstrong-Michaels Brokerage. Later in his life, Phil joined Warren’s Frozen Foods. For years, he and his wife also ran “The Potting Shed.” In his retirement, he worked as an usher for the Iowa Cubs.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane; a granddaughter, Aly Jo Mowery; and a sister, Donna Patrich.

He is survived by one daughter, Peggy Mowery of Fairmont, Minn.; one son, Peter Armstrong of West Jordan, Utah; and two granddaughters.

Phil R. Armstrong, 77, died Friday, March 28, 2008 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center of congestive heart failure. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 2 at Grace United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Glendale Cemetery.

Phil was born in Des Moines and lived most of his life between Des Moines and St. Charles, Iowa. He graduated from Perkins Elementary School, Roosevelt High School and Capital City Commercial College. He was an Army Veteran of the Korean War and his memberships included Grace United Methodist Church, Lions Club, and the Izaak Walton League.

Phil's career began with Timmerwilke Brokerage, where he met his wife, Jane.

The company became Armstrong-Michaels Brokerage. Later in life, Phil joined Warren's Frozen Foods. For years he and his wife followed their dreams and opened "The Potting Shed". Throughout his career as a salesman Phil was known for his honesty and integrity; the customer always came first. In his retirement he has worked as an usher for the Iowa Cubs.

He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, hunting and his dogs. Family was the most important part of Phil's life and he loved to follow his granddaughter's activities and thoroughly enjoyed good food and good friends. He and friend Betty loved to fish, walk and go to the movies.

Survivors include his daughter, Peggy (Brian) Mowery of Fairmont, MN; his son, Peter Armstrong of West Jordan, UT; his granddaughters, Alyssa Jane (Wesley Johnson) Mowery and Alexa Jean Mowery of Fairmont, MN; his very special friends, Betty Hyndman of West Des Moines, Phil Clearman of West Des Moines, Cal Wiseman of Grimes, Bev and Glenn Love of Des Moines. Phil was preceded in death by his wife Jane, his granddaughter Aly Jo Mowery and his sister, Donna Patrich.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 1 at Westover Funeral Home. Memorial Contributions may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, Camp Hantesa or The Humane Society of Winterset.
