JOHN AYERS, ST. CHARLES

John M. Ayers, 75, of St. Charles died March 22, 2008, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines following his battle with cancer.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 26, at St. Charles Parish Church with the Rev. Jim Pemble officiating. Burial was at St. Charles Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the St. Charles Fire & Rescue. Arrangements were handled by Kale Funeral Home in Osceola.

John Ayers was born Aug. 23, 1932, to Mart and Theressa (Wheeler) Ayers of Bagley. He received his education in the St. Charles area, graduating from St. Charles High School. He served in the United States Army as a sergeant and was stationed on the front lines in Korea. His marriage to Judy A. Ostling took place Dec. 1, 1978, in Osceola. John farmed, raised cattle, and worked at AMF in Des Moines for 35 years and for Madison County in the secondary road department for 15 years. He was a member of St. Mary’s American Legion Post 716 and St. Charles Parish Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Julie.

He is survived by his wife, Judy; two sons, Greg Ayers of St. Charles and Victor Ayers of Carlisle; two daughters, Cindy Gray of Norwalk and Kim Harkness of Clive; three brothers, Jerry Ayers of St. Charles, Joe Harris of Norwalk, and James Harris of Riverside, Calif.; two sisters, Mary Carter of Lancaster, Calif., and Lois Ackelson of Des Moines; and five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
