Glen Gates, 85, of Scottsdale, Ariz., and formerly of Winterset, Des Moines, and Eldora, Iowa, died suddenly on March 12, 2008, at Scottsdale Medical Center. Burial will be at a later date at St. Charles Cemetery, St. Charles, Iowa.
Glen grew up on a farm near Norwalk, Iowa, and graduated from Norwalk High School in 1940. After graduation, he farmed and later worked for Laverty Elevator in Indianola, Iowa. He married Gretta Bean of Patterson, Iowa, in 1947. The couple moved to a farm near Eldora, Iowa, in 1948 and raised four children. In 1982, Glen retired from farming and the couple moved to Des Moines, Iowa.
Glen was a courier for LCM Laboratories until 1992. The couple moved to Winterset, Iowa, in 1993 and then to Scottsdale in 2005.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Gretta; daughters, Pam (Mel) Pence of Scottsdale, Ariz., Glenda (Terry) Guthrie of Sarasota, Fla.; sons, Bob (special friend, Kelly) Gates of Marshalltown, Iowa, and Steve (Michel) Gates of Chicago, Ill.; grandchildren, Heidi (Ken) Long, Scottsdale, Ariz., Ben (Shanna) Gates of Ankeny, Iowa; great-grandchildren, Alex and Madison Gates of Ankeny, Iowa, Noah Long of Scottsdale, Ariz., Ava Gates of Chicago, Ill.; brother, Frank Gates of Chicago, Ill.; sister, Esther McKenzie of Sheridan, Wyo.; sisters-in-law, Marie Gates of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Dorothy Gates of Cumming, Iowa; nephews, Gary Gates of Des Moines, Don (Karen) Gates of Chicago, Jeff (Rosanne) McKenzie of Plush, Ore., Rich Gates of Cumming; nieces, Diane Sontag of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Nancy (Steve) Whyte of Goldfield, Iowa, Phyllis (Grant) Givens of Panama City, Fla.; many cousins, friends, and lifelong friends Clarence Essick of Norwalk, Iowa, and George Eischeid of Ft. Myers, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents, F.L. and Matilda Gates; brothers, Martin, John and Ralph Gates; sisters-in-law, Aliene and Sally Gates; brother-in-law, Roger McKenzie; nephew, Mike McKenzie; and his dogs, Peanut and Edna.
