Martha Shaffer was born in Indianapolis, Ind., April 4, 1840 and departed this life Dec. 31, 1915, being 75 years, 8 months and 27 days of age.
She came to Winterset with her parents in 1852, and was united in marriage with Thomas Ballard, July 11, 1861. To this union were born two sons, W. E. of Ewart and Clarence of Montezuma. She made profession of her faith in Christ at the age of 16 and united with the M. E. church and remained steadfast to the end. In her last sickness, when asked if all was well, she replied: "There is nothing in the way and I am going home."
She leaves to mourn their loss, a husband, two sons, three grandchildren; also a brother, Andrew Shaffer of Winterset, besides her many friends. - Montezuma Republic
