JOHN SPENCE

John Spence, that sturdy old Scotch pioneer, passed away at his home in Jackson township, on last Friday, January 14th, at the ripe old age of 83 years, 9 months and 27 days.

He was born in Scotland on March 17, 1832 and came to Canada in 1856 and to Illinois in 1858. In August, 1862, he responded to his adopted country's call to arms and no better soldier ever enlisted in her defense. He served in Co. K of the 84th Illinois Volunteers and took part in every battle in which his regiment was engaged, and was mustered out in July, 1865.

In 1869 he came to Madison county and settled on the farm where he passed away on last Friday. He was married March 13, 1883 to Mary Thompson, who died Feb. 7, 1906. He was a life-long member of the United Presbyterian church. He was highly esteemed for his sterling manhood. For one of his age, his interest in public affairs, his extensive reading and retentive memory were remarkable. The influence of his life was an influence for good. This influence will continue, but he will be missed by many who prized his friendship and valued his counsel and advice.

Funeral services were held at the Pitzer church on Sunday, conducted by Rev. W. J. Stewart of Winterset.
