Page 7, Column 1DEATH OF MRS. ESTHER EWING
Winterset Loses One of Its Oldest and Most Respected Residents
The long illness of Mrs. Esther Ewing ended in death on last Saturday, January 12th. She was one of the oldest residents of Winterset, and a woman of noble Christian character, which she exhibited throughout a long and useful life.
Mrs. Ewing, whose maiden name was Esther M. Stinson, was born in the state of Tennessee, December, 1817. In 1838 she was united in marriage to the Rev. John Campbell Ewing, the organizer and former pastor of the first Presbyterian church of this city. As the fruit of the marriage seven children were born, but three of whom survive: Miss Eudora Ewing, Dr. Fred Ewing and H. M. Ewing, now of Washington, D. C.
In 1854 Mrs. Ewing came to Winterset with her husband, living with him in happy wedlock until his death on Dec. 14, 1868. For 41 years she has been a useful and consistent member of the Presbyterian church in this place, and for over 30 years president of the Woman’s Missionary Society, though during the last years of her life in consequence of ill health, she was unable to perform the active duties of the office. During the lingering illness her Christian faith was unfaltering and her hope undiminished, until on Saturday last she passed away calmly and without a struggle.
On Monday last a large concourse of sympathizing friends attended the funeral services, which were held in the Presbyterian church. After an appropriate duet, rendered by Miss Hyder and Mrs. Ely, the reading of selections of scripture and prayer, the choir sang the favorite hymns of the deceased, “Jesus, Lover of My Soul” and “Nearer My God, to Thee.” The pastor, Dr. Ely, preached a brief discourse, from the text---“Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord.” Revelations 14:17.
