MRS. S. J. McCALMAN

Adda Elnoa McCalman, daughter of Nathaniel and Elnora Powell Birkheimer, was born Jan. 6, 1865 in Henry county, Iowa. In early childhood she went to make her home with her aunt in Washington county, where she grew to womanhood.

On Sept. 29, 1887 she was united in marriage to Samuel J. McCalman of Madison county. To this union were born four children: Catharine, wife of Wm. Frech of near Winterset, Clara Belle and Robert Rush of Brookings, S.D., and Hester Marie, who died in infancy.

Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. McCalman resided on the McCalman homestead, nine and one-half miles west of Winterset. Several years ago they removed to a new location, eight and a quarter miles west of Winterset, where they resided until last spring, when the family home was removed to near Brookings, S.D.

She united with the M. E. church at West Star, under the ministry of Rev. Stire in 1889 and remained a member until her death. She was a charter member of the Ladies' Aid society and the W.C.T.U. of the church and community. She was for years a sufferer from a species of nervous disorder. Five years ago the disorder became such that it was deemed best for her to go to the hospital for care and treatment. during the last few weeks her improvement was very marked, when an attack of heart failure ended in her death, on Sept. 12, 1921, aged 56 years, 8 months and 6 days.

There remain the husband, three children and son in law, to mourn with a large circle of friends and acquaintances. A loving mother, faithful to her light.

Note: Burial in Winterset cemetery
