HARVEY S. GATCHEL

Harvey Sanford Gatchel was born in Ohio, Feb. 11, 1844. He moved to Webster county, Iowa, with his parents when six years of age. Later they moved to Madison county, where he spent the greater part of his life. He went to southern California about two years ago, and remained there until the time of his death, which occurred April 15, 1921, at San Luis Obispo, Calif., being 77 years, 2 months and 4 days old.

He was married to Sylvania Evans of Madison county, on Nov. 3, 1872. To this union were born eight children: Clarence S., of Shelbyville, Mo.; a baby girl who died in infancy; Edith M. Bush of Greenfield; Anise Josie Davis of Weta, S.D.; Manning A., of Winterset; Url Ray, who was lost and drowned when two years of age; Hester Ion Smith of Creston; and M. Luine Jessup of Dexter. One brother, Ellis Manning of Ft. Dodge and two sisters, Mrs. Laura Foster of Corning, Iowa, and Mrs. Alice Wilkinson of Irving, Kans., also surviving him and 23 grandchildren and one great grandchild; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In early life he united with the church and was always found in the service there, as long as he was able to go and always took a firm stand for what he believed to be right.

He suffered much the last few years, but without complaining much and was always rejoicing in his Savior. The funeral service was held April 19, in the First Prebyterian church of Templeton, Calif., by Rev. J. B. Wilhoit and he was laid to rest in the cemetery there amid the wild flowers he loved so well.
