MRS. S. R. HESTER

Mary Emily Peckenpaugh was born Sept. 18, 1842. She departed this life April 20, 1921, aged 78 years, 7 months and 2 days.

She grew to womanhood in Vermilion county, Illinois, was united in marriage to Levi Hester, and came to Iowa in the early 1860s. To this union two children were born, Albert and Flora, the latter dying in infancy. Her husband enlisted in the civil war and was killed and buried at Nashville, Tenn. April 25, 1864.

She was united in marriage to Stephen Hester. To this union 12 children were born, two having preceded her to the better land, Alma and Mrs. Gelia Summers. Those living are: Albert of Sumas City, Wash.; Mrs. Belle Jennings, Columbus City, Iowa; Mrs. Dora Dunn, Adel, Iowa; Mrs. Ada Hayden, Lisbon, N.D.; Mrs. Emma Moody, Winterset; Robert of Denver, Colo.; Mrs. Millie Wright, Adel; Mrs. Carrie Allcott, Reliance, S.D.; Mrs. Ina Robinson, Carlisle; Harvey and Mrs. Eiona Fisher, Van Meter.

Besides these she leaves a husband, 36 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren to mourn. Dissolution came peacefully and quietly, with only the immediate relatives present, while visiting at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Emma Moody of Winterset.

She was a charter member of the U.B. church, an earnest Christian with a high regard for right and justice. Services were held at the U.B. church and interment made at Oakdale cemetery.

All the children were present except Robert, Albert and Carrie. Other relatives from a distance were, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Mann, of LeMars; Mrs. Lucille Capenen, of Ruthven; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Berry of Cumming; Mrs. Nan Berry of Norwalk; Mr. and Mrs. V.M. Addy, of Bevington; Mrs. Lois Buffington and Mrs. Verdie Buffington of Columbus City; Marvel and Nile Wright, of Adel; and Fletcher Moody of Lewanna, Nebr.

Coordinator's note: Transcribed as published. Military pension records show that her first husband, Levi R. Hester, was wounded at Iuka, Mississippi on 19 Sep 1862 and died in the Jackson Hospital, Jackson Tennessee on 13 Oct 1862. He is buried in the Payton Cemetery, Madison County, Iowa.
