JOHN T. YOUNG

John T. Young was born in Belmont county, Ohio, May 12, 1849 and when seven years of age came to Madison county, driving through with team and wagon, with his parents, George W. and Sarah Young, who settled on a farm three miles east of Winterset in 1856. There he made his home until seven years ago, when he moved to Winterset.

After completing the work of the rural school, he attended school in Winterset for a few years and then taught in the schools of the county until the death of his father, when he was called to take charge of the home. When his father knew he must die, he requested John to care for the mother and younger children in the home, which request he faithfully performed, being always an obedient son and loving brother who sacrificed his own interest or pleasures for others.

Until recently he took an active part in politics, and served two terms as recorder of Madison county. He was also elected as county supervisor, and served part of a term, but resigned the office that he might better help with the home duties which he had assumed.

After the death of his mother in 1912, he helped to care for an invalid aunt in the home until she passed away in 1916.

In early life he was a faithful attendant at Sabbath school and church. The last few years he has been a regular attendant at the Methodist church and had recently accepted Christ, taking his stand publicly with the Christian people and had made his decision to unite with the church. His life had always been one of exemplary habits and good influence.

John was the oldest of seven children, the others being: W. C. Young of Shelly, Minn.; Mrs. Mary Houtby of Loup, Nebr.; G. W. James and Nina of Winterset; and Mrs. Frankie Thomson of Earlham, Iowa.

He had not been in rugged health for some time, but was as well as usual until early Saturday morning, when he suffered a stroke of apoplexy and suddenly passed away, April 16, 1921 at the age of 71 years, 11 months and 4 days.

He leaves to mourn his death three brothers, three sisters, other relatives and many friends.

The funeral services were conducted from the Methodist church by the pastor on Tuesday afternoon and the body laid to rest in the Winterset cemetery.
