Page 5RETRIEVE BODY OF WOMAN
A tractor and trailer were used last Thursday, April 21 to remove the body of an elderly Madison County woman, Mabel Brobst, from the nearly inaccessible home which she and her husband occupied in Section 8 of Scott Township.
The woman apparently died early Thursday and her invalid husband, Everett Brobst, crawled to the residence of Carl Hircock, near the St. Charles pavement, to seek help. The area behind the Hircock home where the Brobsts lived is steep rock bluffs and heavily wooded. The only dirt lane leading to the Brobst home had been turned slick the night before by rain. A four-wheel drive pickup truck driven by Madison County Sheriff Rex Rouse was abandoned at the Hircock home in favor of the tractor.
Sheriff’s deputy Paul Welch and officer Martin Hircock were at the Brobst home and assisted in removal of the body. The tractor was driven by Carl Hircock.
Mrs. Brobst was 74 years old. The couple lived without electricity or plumbing. Their three room dwelling was heated by a small wood stove.
