POLLY HUFFMAN, WINTERSET

Hilma Pauline “Polly” Cumps Huffman, age 85 years, 8 months, passed away Feb. 16, 2008, at Indianola Good Samaritan Nursing Home. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset. Burial will be in the McGinnis Cemetery in Patterson, Iowa.

Polly had been a resident at the Indianola Good Samaritan Nursing Home since 2005, after transferring from Madison Square in Winterset. She will be remembered for raising other children when she and her husband lived on a farm called Turkey Ranch Hill in Patterson, Iowa, for 55 years. She married Levi Huffman in March of 1946 and moved from Des Moines to Patterson. During this time, she joined the Patterson Methodist Church and was a member of the United Methodist Women.She volunteered her services in this church and the Winterset Methodist Church. In 1968, she joined Eastern Star as her husband was a Mason. This began a long and loving service in which she served as Worthy Matron in 1976, 1984, 1985, and 1992. She also served as Grand Representative from Iowa to the state of Kentucky. Because of her love for this organization and the many friends she made in Kentucky, she was given the Kentucky state flag after it flew briefly over the Capitol. In 1995, Polly was voted Citizen of the Year for her numerous years of volunteering. In 1992, she and Lee served as King and Queen of the annual Madison County Covered Bridge Festival held in Winterset. Polly was politically active for the Democratic Party and volunteered at the polls. She was also a member of the American Women’s Auxiliary and passed out many poppies.

Polly is survived by her daughter, Launa Jamison and husband Keith of Knoxville and their children, Jolene Furr and husband Kurt of Pella and Kent Jamison and wife Kristina of Indianapolis; son, Jeoffrey Huffman and wife Theresa of Greensboro, N.C., and their children Jeff Huffman Jr. and Kimberly DeCamp and husband Travis of Des Moines; daughter, Wende Gau and husband Jerry of Parker, Colo., and their children, Chad Gau and JerAye Gau. She is also survived by her sister, Twyla Hogan of Des Moines, and her three children. Polly has six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Levi Huffman, in 2001; her two daughters, Laurel Lee Huffman in 1967 and Robyn Lynn Huffman in 1983; her brother, Woodrow Cumps; her sister, Grace Light; and her parents, Andrew Cumps and Hattie Fray Cumps Hild.

A visitation will be held today (Wednesday, Feb. 20) from noon until 8 p.m. at Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset. Her family will greet friends from 6–8 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the Patterson United Methodist Church, Multi-Purpose Center, Good Samaritan Activity Center, or Hospice of Central Iowa.
