Obituary

Emma May Brown was born in Worthington, Madison county, Iowa, March 28, A.D. 1866 and died Aug. 16, 1903, aged 37 years, 4 months and 18 days. She united with the Methodist Episcopal church at the age of about 14 years at Worthington, Iowa, from which place she had transferred her membership to various places, but last to the Kasson charge, near her late home, at which place it continued till her death.

On Sept. 11, 1887 she was married to B. S. Van Gundy, and to this union were born three children, 2 daughters aged 15 & 13 years respectively and one son aged 10, all of whom with the husband survive her.

Mrs. Van Gundy had not enjoyed good health for the past few years, but not until this spring was it discovered that she was suffering with a cancer. She was immediately taken to Mercy hospital in Des Moines, where an operation was successfully preformed. The disease however, was of such long standing that it could not be checked and she went to Des Moines for another operation, but owing to her weak condition it was thought best not to attempt it.

She then returned to Winterset, where she gradually grew weaker, at times suffering intense pain until finally relieved by death. She received the tenderest care from relatives and friends, upon whom she made a lasting impression by her unselfish disposition and silent suffering. Her faith in the Savior remained unshaken to the last and gave evidence of her true Christian spirit.

The funeral was held Mon., August 12. A short service at the house preceeded (preceded) the church service at Worthington. The sermon was preached by O., M. Yaggy, pastor of the Evangelical church at Bethany, near which was Mrs. Van Gundy’s late home. The text was taken from Eph. 2.5, the theme being “Saved by the Grace,” which was her favorite hymn. The interment took place at the Worthington cemetery.
