Winterset Madisonian-Winterset, Iowa
February 22, 1899

Emmanuel Hoeness, who lived near Pitzer, was killed Sunday on the "Q" railroad between Creston and Afton. The morning train going east found his body near the tracks with a large cut and wound to the head. They carried him to Afton and turned the body over to the coroner. The supposition is that he tried to board the west bound freight in the night which runs very slowly on the heavy upgrade there and fell off. His remains were brought to Pitzer and will be buried there tomorrow.

MANGLED BY THE CARS.

Well Known Citizen of Pitzer Killed Near Creston.

Creston, Feb. 20.—Special to State Register:--Emanuel Hoeness of Pitzer, Madison county, was found a few miles east of Creston this morning lying beside the Burlington tracks. His body had been dismembered and mutilated by the cars. Identification was for a time difficult, because deceased had a cousin by the same name living in the same county. His death was accidental.

The deceased was a cousin of Chas. Hoeness of Jackson township. He was without family and had only a few days since held a sale disposing of his farm implements and personal property. He left his cousins place Saturday and they did not know where he had gone to. The particulars of his death are not known and will probably remain a mystery.
