Obituary

At 2:15 o'clock a.m. January 12th at his home on west Jefferson street, occurred the death of Thomas Benton Nicholson.

The deceased was born in Washington county, Indiana, the 4th day of December 1843. In 1859, he, in company with his parents, brothers and sisters, moved from Indiana to Iowa and located in the north part of Madison county. He is one of Iowa's old settlers and a pioneer of this county-a beloved citizen by all who knew him. In 1870 he and Sarah Brittain, his present widow, were united in marriage and six children were born to them as a result of this bond.

Mr. Nicholson, together with his family, lived on a farm in the north part of this county until about fifteen years ago, when, on account of ill health, he was compelled to abandon the farm. He then moved to Winterset where he resided with his family until his death. Since leaving the farm he has been an almost incessant sufferer and for the last two or three years was an invalid. He however, was able to be up and about the greater part of the time, until about three months ago, when he was taken down with inflammation of the bowels which cost him his life.

He was a member of the Baptist church of this town, and an earnest and devoted Christian. His funeral occurred at the Brittain church, where a large concourse of people gathered to pay the last sad rites to the dead. The Rev. Hicks preached the funeral sermon and spoke very touchingly and feelingly.

The deceased leaves a widow and five children to mourn his death. We extend to them our heartfelt sympathy in this their bereavement.
