CHARLES PRICE, 98, DIES AT OTTUMWA

Charles Franklin Price, former Winterset resident, died Monday afternoon, January 2nd at the Jefferson Square Manor in Ottumwa after an extended illness. Mr. Price who was 98 years of age had been in poor health for several years, but had gone to Ottumwa in September 1966.

He was the father of Mrs. Arling Smith of Winterset and funeral services were held at the First United Presbyterian church this morning at 10 o'clock and brief graveside services will be held at the Oak Shade cemetery in Marion at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon. The Rev. John E. Fink, conducted his services here and at Marion.

Mr. Price was born at Olds in Henry county, March 21, 1868, a son of Thomas and Melissa Mathews Price; here he grew to manhood and was married to Verna Hochreiter of Winfield, January 11, 1891. He was a farmer and later the family moved to Marion where he also operated a farm. They were the parents of two daughters and the mother died in 1922.

Since 1943, Mr. Price has called Winterset his home. When he moved here, he refinished furniture as long as his health permitted. Several years ago, he moved to a Presbyterian manor in Washington and resided there until last September when he was taken to Ottumwa. While here he was a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge, the Presbyterian church and had been a Mason in his earlier years.

Survivors of Mr. Price are his two daughters, Mrs. Mabelle Smith of Winterset and Mrs. W. L. (Esther) Grupe of Winfield. He also leaves a granddaughter, Mrs. Robert Briggs of Winfield and two great grandson, Keith and Donald Briggs.
