JUDGE KINKADE, FORMER LOCAL RESIDENT, DIES

A former Madison county youth who rose to highest honors in the bar circles of the state of Ohio was paid high tribute by the press of that state upon his death May 25.

That youth was Judge Reynolds B. Kinkade of Ohio state supreme court. Judge Kinkade was born in Keokuk, Iowa. As a boy in his teens he lived in Winterset during the 70s. One of his sisters, Letitia Kinkade, taught in the local high school for several years. Another sister, Addie Kinkade, married Byram Leonard of this county.

Judge Kinkade spent most of his life in Toledo. He served as Common Pleas judge there from 1900 to 1908, was Circuit Court judge from 1908 to 1914, was a member of the Appelate (Appellate) Court from 1914 to 1924. In that year, Judge Kinkade was elected to the state supreme court, remaining with that body until failing health forced his retirement in 1933.

Judge Kinkade’s death at the age of 81 called forth a number of unusual tributes from the press of Ohio and the leading jurists of the state.

JUDGE KINKADE DIES - FORMER RESIDENT

Judge Reynolds Kinkade, of the supreme court of Ohio, who died at his home in Toledo, Ohio, may 25, lived in Winterset in the seventies when he was a boy he was a brother of Thompson Kinkade and Addie and Letitia Kinkade who were teachers in the Winterset public schools. He was a classmate of Luther Cassiday, will Potter, George McCaughan, George Bancroft, Robert Goshorn, Effie Kemis and Jennie Bartlett, under superintendents Chamberlain and Cox. The Kinkade family lived in the one-story house that stood where Dr. Pratt now lives.

Judge Kinkade left Winterset in 1875 or 1876 and went to Ohio where he was admitted to the bar in 1878. He was Common Pleas Judge in 1900, Circuit Court Judge from 1908 to 1924, when he was elected a member of the appellate court where he served until 1924 when he became a member of the supreme court.

He was married to Addie George of Perrysbury, Ohio, in 1871. He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Rakestraw.

The Toledo Times pays him the following tribute: “Judge Kinkade performed his duties without fear or favor. He punished the transgressors without regard to the defendant’s station in life. But he tempered his judgments with mercy. When off the bench Judge Kinkade was the finest of friends; his loyalties were traditional”.

In an era when there is deploring over the declining quality of the bench, the gleaming spirit and intellect of judge Kinkade shine out like a beacon. His death at 81 closes a long valuable service to the cause of justice.
