Mrs. Mary Jane Shoemaker

Mrs. Mary Jane Shoemaker died at her home in the east part of town, Friday, June 25th. She had been an invalid the greater part of her life, and for many years confined to her bed much of the time. For several weeks, she had appeared to be in her usual health, but passed away suddenly the morning of the 25th. Mrs. Shoemaker was seventy-three years of age on April 24, 1909.

The funeral services were held Sunday morning at 10 o'clock, conducted by Rev. S. J. Callison and burial made in the Baptist cemetery north of town. She is survived by her son, George Shoemaker of Union township, and her daughter Miss Melissa Shoemaker with whom she had lived for many years and also by eleven grandchildren. Her husband preceded her in death in February of the present year.

Obituary

Mary Jane Steel was born in Ohio April 25, 1836 and died June 25, 1909, aged 73 years and 2 months. In May 1836 she with her parents moved to Illinois. In 1858 she was united in marriage with John Shoemaker who departed this life Feb. 6, 1909. To this union were born five children, three dying in infancy. In 1879 she with her husband and two children came to Madison county, Iowa which has been her home until death. She leaves to mourn her loss two children, Melissa and George, and eleven grandchildren. The funeral occurred from the home Sunday conducted by Rev. Samuel Callison.
