Death of Al L. Griffith

Al L. Griffith died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Frank Wasson early last Saturday morning, after an illness originating in a severe cold contracted last winter. Although a resident of Winterset a little less than seven years, Mr. Griffith had formed a somewhat extensive acquaintance and gained the warm friendship of many. He was born in Lee county, this state, in 1847. Moved with his parents to Des Moines in 1856. Here he learned the printer's trade and was in the employ of the Iowa State Register for a period of 33 years. In the war of the Rebellion, he served his country as a member of Company C of the 8th Iowa volunteer infantry. He was married June 13, 1869 to Miss Mary A. Russel who with two children, Frank L. of Des Moines and Mrs. Laura Wasson of Winterset, survive the husband and father. He was a member of the Methodist church and the I.O.O.F. order, the latter organization assisting in the burial rites held at Woodland ______________________

Death of A. L. Griffith

On Saturday morning, June 26th, occurred the death of A. L. Griffith, another of Winterset’s respected citizens. Although Mr. Griffith had been a citizen of this place but a few years he had made many warm friends who extend their sympathy to the bereaved family.

Albert Lee Griffith was born Oct. 10, 1847 at West Point, Lee county, Iowa. Moved with his parents to Des Moines, Ia. in 1853. While young he learned the printer trade and worked on the Des Moines Register for about thirty-three years. On the 21st day of January 1865 he joined Samuel E. Rankin’s Company C 8th Regiment of Iowa Infantry Volunteers to serve one year and was discharged January 23, 1866 at Selnea, Alabama.

He was married to Mary A. Russell Jan. 13, 1869, and to this union was born four children, two dying while quite small. The two surviving are Frank L., of Des Moines, and Mrs. Lena Wasson, of this city.

He was a member of the Methodist church of Des Moines and a prominent Odd Fellow. He came to Winterset in 1902.

Short services were held at the home Saturday and the remains were taken to Des Moines and interred in the Woodland Cemetery with Odd Fellows ceremony.
