Obituary

Robert Alexander Matthews was born March 13, 1823, in White county, Illinois, and died at his home in Pacific Junction, Iowa, August 18, 1893, aged 70 years, 4 months and 29 days.

When two years of age his parents moved with him to Pike county, Illinois. He was converted at the age of sixteen and joined the Methodist Episcopal church. In the year 1842 he was married to Miss Charity A. Beall, and in 1854 removed with her to Madison county, Iowa. Here in 1855, under the pastorate of Rev. Richard Swarington, he was licensed to exhort, and the following year under Rev. Baker, he was licensed to preach and has continued a loyal preacher ever since. He came to Pacific Junction nearly four years ago, and made his home there until his death.

He was the father of fourteen children, six of whom, with his wife are left to mourn the loss of a kind father and loving husband. Their loss is his gain. He said to the writer not long before his death: “I am only waiting, for me to live is Christ, but to die is gain.”

The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. M. T. Tweedy at the M. E. church in Pacific Junction, and the remains were laid to rest in the Glenwood Cemetery.
