Charles Maxon Shafer, 94, died Jan. 19, 2008, at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset.
Funeral services were held today (Wednesday, Jan. 23) at Grace Baptist Church in Winterset. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery.
Charles Shafer was born June 3, 1913, in Greene, Iowa, to Wilbur “Bill” and Minnie (Butler) Shafer. He received his early education in Greene, graduating in 1931. He worked in many construction jobs, eventually forming his own construction company. Charles served in the United States Army for four and one-half years. During World War II, he served with the 43rd Engineers building airstrips in Australia, New Guinea, and the Philippines.
Charles married Ruth Evelyn Best on July 27, 1946. They moved to Winterset in 1947. Over the years, his construction company completed jobs across the states of Iowa, Missouri and Kansas.
Charles was a charter member of Grace Baptist Church and served there for more than 30 years. He also was awarded an honorary lifetime membership on the Board of Directors of Iowa Regular Baptist Camp in Clear Lake.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruth; his brothers, Alonzo Burr and Wilbur Lynn; his sisters, Eileen and Elsie Ruth; a son-in-law, David Young; and a grandson, Aaron Shafer.
He is survived by his three sons, Robert Shafer and wife Suzanne of Lake Forest, Calif., Peter Shafer and wife Lynette of Winterset, and John Shafer and wife Sonya of Lawrenceville, Ga.; three daughters, Deborah Shafer of Winterset, Lydia Satterlee of Tiffin and Sarah Koethe and husband Duane of Waukee; and 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
