GAYLA MILLS, WINTERSET

Gayla Mills, 86, of Winterset died Jan. 17, 2008, at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset.

A memorial service was held Sunday, Jan. 20, at the First United Presbyterian Church in Winterset. Memorial graveside services will be held at a later date. Her body has been cremated as to her wishes. Memorials given to the family will be directed to Friends of the Winterset Public Library. Arrangements were handled by Collins Oak Park Chapel & Funeral Services in Winterset.

Gayla Mills was born March 21, 1921, in Winterset to Walker and Erabel (Moland) Fletcher. She grew up on the family farm north of Winterset and was a 1939 graduate of Winterset High School. She also received a home economics degree from Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo. Her marriage to W. Robert Mills took place March 6, 1942, in St. Charles, Mo.

A lifetime resident of Winterset, Gayla had been the bookkeeper for Mills Motors in Winterset and was one of the first in the state to adopt a computerized bookkeeping system. She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church, Progressive Study Club and local bridge clubs.

She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, Ai Fletcher and Willis Fletcher, and a sister, Ruth Gorman.

She is survived by two daughters, Sherry Alley of West Des Moines and Nancy Paulsen of Omaha, Neb.; one son, Rich Mills of Winterset; a brother, Paul Fletcher of Sioux City; and six grandchildren.
