James Barrett, who died at Bevington last week, was buried on the following Wednesday at Stuart, his former home. He was a union veteran, having served in the army four years. The G.A.R. post attended his funeral in a body, and the casket containing his remains was enwrapped in the American flag in defense of which he fought.

Died, Monday, April 18, at Bevington, Iowa, James Barrett, aged 54 years. His remains were brought to Stuart for interment and the funeral took place from the Catholic church Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock. The deceased was born in Ireland, coming to this country when quite young and locating at Napoleon, Ohio. For many years he was in the employ of the Rock Island rail road, and made his home at Menlo and Walnut.
He services as a soldier four years, entering as a private in the 14th Ohio, and was mustered out as Captain of his company.
He was an unmarried man and leaves one brother, W. T. Barrett, of Stuart, and four sisters, Mrs. B. S. Adams, of Omaha; Mrs. Frank Flenner, of Minneapolis; Mrs. Scott, of Cleveland, O.; and Mrs. M. Flynn, of Jefferson township.
The members of Maxwell Post, G.A.R. attended his funeral in a body. Around his casket was wrapped the flag he gave four years of his life to defend; and Father Foley, in his sermon alluded to the bravery and faithfulness of the deceased, as a soldier, and paid a fine tribute to the defenders of this union.
