Darius Bowles Cook, son of William H. and Zeziah Cook, was born November 3, 1856 in the Bear Creek neighborhood, Dallas county, Iowa, and died at his home in Earlham May 11, 1936.
On March 3, 1885 he was married to Jane Hadley. She preceded him in death on March 5, 1920 at the home of their daughter, Zella Hunnicutt in Des Moines.
Two children were born to this union; Lourd E. who died in infancy and Zella who survives.
On June 30, 1927 he was married to Lucretia J. Haynes who survives.
There remain to mourn his passing, besides the host of friends, his wife, Lucretia, his daughter Zella and her husband, Albert Hunnicutt and two granddaughters, Roberta and Elizabeth Jean. Mr. Cook also leaves one brother and sister-in-law, Peter Cook and wife, Maria.
Darius Cook has been a man who has consistently followed the leading of the spirit in church and personal affairs as well. In his autobiography he tells of his spiritual birth in a most striking manner-of how as a small boy of nine or ten he knelt one evening alone in the corner of an old rail corn crib and prayed his first prayer to God.
He was recorded a minister by the Bear Creek Monthly Meeting of Friends in December of 1890 after having preached his first sermon at Bear Creek in June of that year.
For some time thereafter he served that church intermittently. Later he was given charge of the East Linn meeting, going there every other Sabbath. In the fall of 1894 he was secured to serve Bear Creek on the alternate Sabbaths. He continued that service for two years but declined a request to serve a third year.
He became pastor of the Burr Oak meeting in 1899. At the conclusion of this service he was Quarterly meeting Supt. of Bear Creek.
Darius Cook has been a man most trusted, honored and revered by those who knew him. The spiritual life of every community where he has lived has been greatly enriched by his service in it.
Funeral services in charge of Rev. Reece and Rev. Nora Craven were held at the Earlham Friends church Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock. Interment was in Bear Creek cemetery.
