Passed to the Beyond

On last Saturday evening, March 18, 1893, the spirit of May Mercer passed to the unknown future. She was born in Winterset in 1871, and with a few short interruptions this city had been her home for her whole life. Some months ago she fell a victim to the dreaded disease, consumption, and her decline was rapid. She bore her sufferings with meekness and patience. Amiable in life, she was beautiful in death, and her early departure breaks for the first time the family tie and leaves a vacant place in a large circle of friends.

The funeral services were held Monday afternoon, and were largely attended. Rev. F. Harris conducted the religious exercises, and Mr. E. R. Zeller, who had known the deceased from childhood as a school girl, as a normal student and as a teacher, in obedience to the dying wish of the departed, sang her favorite hymn, and read a short biography and made a few appropriate remarks upon her life and character.

Note: Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
