In Memoriam

Mrs. Margaret Adams Forbes was born in county Tyrone, Ireland, in 1830, and in 1847 came with her parents to America, and located in Carroll county, Ohio. In April 1853 she was united in marriage to Mr. Boyd Forbes, and in 1854 united with the Associate Reformed Church of Cadiz, Ohio. In the fall of 1856, she with her husband moved to McLean county, Ill., where she lived until March, 1892, when they came to their present home in Winterset, Iowa.

Mrs. Forbes was a consistent and exemplary member of the United Presbyterian church since its organization, and at the time of her death was a member of Winterset congregation. On account of a nervous disability, she was prevented from regular attendance, but the language of her heart was, “If I forget thee, O’ Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning, and my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth.” She was always cheerful and hopeful, and rejoiced greatly at the prosperity that has attended Winterset congregation during the past years. Her last sickness was comparatively brief, and correspondingly severe. Thursday evening February 23, she was taken with acute pneumonia, and remarked as she was taken to bed, that they would never have to do so again. To a friend a few days later she remarked that she would not live long, and when asked if all was well, answered, “Yes.”

On Sabbath, March 5th, at 11:30 a.m. with no apparent struggle, she fell asleep in Jesus. Truly, “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord; yea, saith the Spirit, they rest from their labors, and their works do follow them.”

A husband, two sons, two daughters, two brothers and three sisters survive her, and all save the sisters were present during her last sickness. At 2 p.m. Monday, March 6th, services were held at the home, after which the body was laid to rest in the city cemetery. A large concourse of people were present and expressions of sympathy were heard on every hand.

Note: Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
