Mr. Jesse P. Shepherd, who was stricken with paralysis on Wednesday of last week, died at 10 o’clock Monday night. On Wednesday afternoon he was standing in Smith & Frankelbergers and as the court bell rang, he remarked that he would go into court. As he spoke the words he lost his balance and staggered against the show case. Mr. Frankelberger assisted him into a chair, and he seemed to recover himself for a moment, but soon afterward became worse, and said that he thought he was paralyzed. He was taken to his home, where everything possible was done for him, but he did not fully recover the use of his faculties. The funeral was held last Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. F. Harris, of the Methodist church.
He was a veteran of the Mexican war, and although not a member of the G.A.R., that body escorted his remains to the grave. Mr. Shepherd was among the early settlers of Madison county and was highly respected by all. He lived for a long time in Douglas township, but of late years had made his home in Winterset. At the time of his death he was sixty-five years of age. He leaves several grown up sons and daughters some of whom live in this county and others at a distance.
