James W. Gibbon was born near Green Castle, Putnam County, Indiana, February 4th, 1832. He was married February 26th, 1857 to Isabel Brown and moved to Iowa about 30 years ago. Ten children blessed their union, eight of whom survive him, three girls and five boys. All the children except the oldest who resides in Kansas were present at the funeral. One girl died in infancy and the second son died at the age of 21 years.

The Rev. C. W. Hoover delivered a very able sermon at his home, April 23rd from John 5: 28: "Marvel not at this, for the hour is coming in which all that are in the grave shall hear his voice".

Mr. Gibbon was a man of disposition kind and agreeable to all. He was a kind and affectionate husband, a true friend and neighbor. He had been a constant sufferer for a number of years which he endured with patience to the end. God in his wisdom saw fit to call him home, leaving a desolate home and many sad hearts. The remains were interred in the Barney cemetery on Sunday afternoon with a large attendance of old friends and neighbors.
