John Thomas was born in Preble county, Ohio, October 24, 1823. When twelve years of age his father’s family moved to Indiana where he lived till 1854 when he came to Madison county, Iowa. Thus it will be seen that Mr. Thomas is among the oldest of settlers.
The same year of his arrival he was married to Miss Mary Abraham, near Winterset, to whom seven children were born, all of whom are grown and still living.
Mr. Thomas has been in poor health for several years, and for nearly a year was afflicted with dropsy, till Monday the 18th inst. when death ended his sufferings.
By special request, Rev. H. Pearce conducted the funeral services on Wednesday morning. All the children were present at the funeral except Mrs. Amanda Jessup, who lives in Cheyenne and did not arrive till Wednesday evening.
Mr. Thomas was a kind father and husband, a good neighbor and exemplary Christian, and the sympathy of many kind friends with the bereaved ones is doing all in human power to lift the cloud of sorrow.
