Rites Held For Former Resident

Rev. Foster Wise Powell of LaMesa, Calif., formerly of Winterset, died Sunday, December 30, at his home at the age of 79. He was the son of Dr. Edward F. Powell, who was a dentist in Winterset for many years. Powell and his wife Julia and daughter Martha lived in Winterset from 1931 to 1938 when he practiced law.

Born in Iowa, Rev. Powell graduated from Hastings College of Law in San Francisco and practiced law in Iowa before moving to San Diego, Calif. in 1938. He was an attorney in San Diego and La Mesa, Calif., for about 40 years before becoming an episcopal minister.

Rev. Powell graduated from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific and was pastor of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in San Jacinto, Calif. from 1961 to 1963. He returned to the San Diego area in 1965 where as a semi-retired minister, he served as a counselor.

Rev. Powell was a member of the La Mesa Optimist Club and was a longtime member of the San Diego County Bar Association.

He is survived by his wife Julia; a daughter, Mrs. Martha J. Alf; a grandson, Richard Alf; and three sisters, Winifred Peak of San Diego, Elizabeth---(line illegible)--Fla; and Mrs. Kenneth Vinsel of Louisville, Kentucky.

Services were held Friday January 4, at St. Philip the Apostle Episcopal Church in Lemon Grove, Calif., with entombment at the Cypress View Mausoleum.
