Death of Mary M. Houlette

Word was received here last week of the death of Mrs. Mary McNeley Houlette, on September 27th at her home in Miami, Florida. The deceased was a daughter of James and Jane McNeley, and was born December 11, 1850, in Suscarawas county, Ohio. When she was three years of age, the family came west and pioneered on Buckeye Prairie, afterwards named Ohio township, where Truro now stands. Here she was married to Louis Smith Houlette, September 17, 1882. She and her husband celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary ten days prior to her death. The spring after they were married they went to their first farm home in Adair county. After two years they moved to Winterset and their home was two blocks west of the St. Nicholas hotel, until in 1908, when they spent one year in Des Moines. They lived in Kansas City and Warrensburg, Missouri, until two years ago, she went to make her home with her children in Miami, Florida.

Mrs. Houlette leaves her husband, three daughters and one son; Mrs. Grace Hahn and Mrs. Lois Hayes of Miami, Florida; Mrs. Blanche Leese of Boone; and Cal J. Houlette of Long Beach, California. She also is survived by three granddaughters, one great grandson and two brothers, S. Jacob McNeley and Ethel McNeley of Des Moines.

She was a member of the Christian church in Winterset and at the time of her death was chaplain of the Woman's Relief Corps in Miami. She joined the corps in Winterset 36 years ago. She was past noble grand of the Rebekah lodge here and was a long time member of the W.C.T.U. Burial services were held at Miami.
