Death of Mrs. Frank Drennan

Mrs. Frank Drennan, who has been one of Winterset's most prominent citizens, died Thursday, October 4th at the hospital in Nevada. Mrs. Drennan had been in poor health for a number of months and had been receiving treatment at Nevada for the past eleven weeks. It was thought at first that she was suffering from rheumatism, but it was later found that she had cancer of the spine and nothing could be done to improve her condition.

The Reverend Mr. Wyckoff, of Des Moines, conducted the funeral services at the Drennan home on West Washington street, Saturday, October 6 and burial was in the Winterset cemetery.

Mr. and Mrs. Drennan moved to Winterset twenty years ago and since that time they have taken an active interest in the affairs of the community. Mrs. Drennan was an active republican and was the first chairman of the women in this county. She was largely responsible for organizing the Parent-Teacher association and took a great deal of interest in club work. She was a member of Chapter AG, P.E.O. and was at one time president of the City Federation. It was largely through Mrs. Drennan's efforts that the county Red Cross nurse was employed, and only recently she was instrumental in the work of the Madison County Historical Society. She was one of the committee that secured the rooms for the organization and helped to collect and arrange the exhibits. She was a living example of the quotation of Theodore Roosevelt, "Far and Away, the best prize that life offers, is to work hard at work worth doing."

The deceased is survived by her husband and daughter, Anne; one brother, S. B. England of Oskaloosa; and two sisters, Mrs. Laura Cook and Mrs. Emma Mendenhall of Whittier, California.

Her obituary was read as follows:
Pearl England Drennan, youngest daughter of Amelia and Harvey England was born in Mahaska, county, July 22, 1876. She began her school life in the public schools of Oskaloosa, graduating from that high school. After this she attended Grinnell college and was graduated from the State Teachers college at Cedar Falls. She taught school in Oskaloosa, Glenwood and Boone.

She was married to Frank Drennan, July 22, 1902 and has lived in Glenwood, Emerson, Los Angeles, California and for the last 20 years in Winterset, where she took a deep interest in the betterment of the community.

She has for many years been a faithful member of the Episcopal church. All children have lost a friend; their welfare was ever near to her heart and prompted untiring effors in their behalf. Truly did her life exemplify the motto of Theodore Roosevelt.
