John Dale Elderkin (1966)

John D. Elderkin, a native of Madison county, died of cancer last Thursday, July 26, at Vinton, where he had lived the last eight years. He was 47 years of age.

Mr. Elderkin had been serving as a professional farm manager, with headquarters at Vinton, for the last eight years.

Mr. Elderkin was born near Winterset March 17, 1919, a son of Glenn P. and Opal Clark Elderkin. He graduated from Iowa State University at Ames, and served four years overseas with the U. S. army during World War II. He held a federal government position at Knoxville, Tennessee, before moving to Vinton.

He was active in the Vinton Methodist church in which he was a lay leader, chairman of the official board, a trustee, member of the chancel choir, and past member of the executive committee. He was also past master of the Vinton Masonic lodge, and member of the Eastern Star.

Mr. Elderkin was married to Esther Canfield at Des Moines in 1947. She survives him. He also leaves a son, John N., a daughter, Shelley Margaret; four sisters, Mrs. Victor Peterson of Red Oak, Mrs. Henry Brueck, Jr. and Mrs. John Holley of Nevada, and Mrs. Thomas Newton, Jr. of Des Moines; and a brother , Frank J. Elderkin of Winterset.

Funeral services were held Monday morning from the Vinton Methodist church, with burial in the Winterset cemetery at 4 o'clock.
