Sarah Elizabeth Franks was born in Perry county, Pennsylvania, Dec. 9, 1837. When a child her parents moved to Burlington, Iowa, where she grew to young womanhood. Here she was married to John P. Dick Dec. 23, 1859. To this union were born four sons and four daughters, one son having died in childhood and the other children are still living.
With her husband she moved to Madison county about 50 years ago, where her home has been and where all the children have been reared; her husband having passed away on Spril 7, 1896. Since then she has made her home with the chidren, having lived the past two years with her daughter, Mrs. J. E. Hamilton in Winterset and where for most of the time she has been a sufferer.
She early learned to know her Savior and her life has been one of faith in Christ and trust in God. She was a devout Christian mother and a member of the Friends church, which was located on the farm, where for so many years they made their home. She fought a good fight and has now won the crown. She leaves to mourn her death seven children: Wm. A. Dick, of Clarke county; Mrs. Alice Sidener, of Des Moines; Mrs. J. E. Hamilton, Winterset; John Dick, Independence; Frank Dick, Winterset; Mrs. Laura Burgus, Murray and Mrs. Elizabeth Doolittle of Omaha, Nebr. She also leaves two sisters living in Burlington and a sister in Farragut; 22 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Having lived in the county for 50 years and so well known, her friends are many.
She quietly passed away on Feb. 7th, 1919, at the age of 81 years, 1 month and 28 days.
Funeral services were conducted from the Union church by Rev. Jackson Giddens, pastor of the M. E. Church and the remains laid to rest in the cemetery beside the church.
