Wednesday, February 5, 1919GEORGE M. GROUT
George M. Grout was born in Rockford, Ill., Nov 1, 1857. Soon afterward the family removed to Knox county, Ill., and thereafter to Iowa and in 1872 to Madison County. The farm where they located was a mile east of where the Peru road crosses Middle river, now known as Buffalo.
The Comptons for many years owned considerable land and conducted a flouring mill at that place. Mr. Grout was married to Miss Luella Compton, Dec. 25, 1878. By uniting industry and strict economy he became the owner of several farms in the vicinity, which he improved and beautified. More recently he removed to Winterset and engaged in the coal and grain business, in which he was connected with his son in law, W. H. Blake, at the time of his death.
In early manhood he was converted during a revival meeting held at the Buffalo school house under the ministrations of Jeremiah Snyder, a United Brethren pioneer preacher. He united with that church and for many years worshiped at Providence Chapel, which was erected during his residence in that community. When he removed to Winterset he united with the Methodist church, of which he was a member at the time of his death.
Early in January, he started to visit relatives in Colorado, California and Oregon. On Thursday, Jan. 23d, when returning in an automobile to Pasadena with his brother Fred and family, with whom he was visiting, the car was struck by a trolley and all were injured, George fatally. He died Sunday morning, Jan. 26th, 1919.
The immediate relatives of the deceased are his aged mother, wife and five children as follows: Mrs. H. Blake of Winterset, F. W. Grout of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Ray and Mrs. Elsie Danforth of Winterset and Deloss of Patterson. There are also three brothers: Edward of Winterset, Fred W. of Pasadena, Calif., and Henry of Fleming, Colo. There is also a half sister who lives at Portland, Oregon.
The remains arrived in Winterset Saturday and the funeral services were held at the Methodist church Sunday afternoon, Rev. Jackson Giddens officiating.
