Obituary

Nannie Steel Bourdon, wife of A. F. Bourdon, died at her home in Des Moines, Iowa, Thursday, November 9, 1899.

Nannie Steel, daughter of Stephen and Jane Steel, was born in Madison county, Iowa, July 5th, 1874, and grew to womanhood in St. Charles. Her amiable disposition endeared her to all who knew her, and made her especially helpful to me as her instructor in the public school. Some three years ago she acquired a commercial education at Des Moines, where she secured a position as book-keeper and stenographer with the firm of Champagne & Son, launderers, serving them about two and a half years. On July 9, 1899, she was united in marriage with Mr. A. F. Bourdon, the junior member of the above firm. Her happy married life was short—only four months—when she was taken by the disease of spinal meningitis, leaving her young husband, and other relatives and friends to mourn her early death.

Her remains, accompanied by friends, were brought to St. Charles Friday morning, and an impressive funeral service was held in the Church of Christ, conducted by the pastors of the Methodist and United Presbyterian churches; after which interment was made in the St. Charles cemetery. The bereaved ones have the sympathy of the entire community, and we commend them to the God of love, who cares for the sorrowing ones.

Died, at her home in Des Moines, on Thursday, November 9th, of spinal-meningitis, Mrs. Nannie Bourden. She was a daughter of Stephen and Mrs. Jane Steel, of this place. She was born in South township, July 5, 1874. Her parents soon after removed to St. Charles, where she grew up to young womanhood, in the mean time acquiring a good education in the city schools. A few years ago she went to Des Moines and took a commercial course and became well fitted for a useful life. She had for more than two years filled the position of stenographer and book-keeper for the firm of Champaign & Son, and on July 9th, 1899, became the wife of Fred Bourdon, junior member of the above named firm, and continued her work until no longer able. About or soon after last Christmas she discovered that she was not enjoying her usual good health, but hoped she might recover without alarming her friends. She however began to decline, slowly at first, but rapidly as the end neared. Her remains were brought to this city, and funeral under direction of Rev. Sellards, occurred from the Church of Christ on Friday, the 10th inst. Death is accused of loving a shining mark, and in this case the adage was surely verified. Hers was a life of purity, kindness and usefulness. Her attractive appearance, her funny disposition, her pleasing manner, her womanly ways and her excellent conduct all through life secured to her a friend in every one who formed her acquaintance.

Her young husband, her aged parents, her sisters and a host of loving relatives and friends most deeply feel her loss, and are accorded heartfelt sympathy by this entire community.
