Benj. S. Vierling was born in Salem, North Carolina, October 17th, 1837, and died at his home in Scott township, Madison county, Iowa, May 31st, 1905.
His father's family came from Europe early in the ninteenth century, and belonged to that devoted and persecuted sect, the Moravians from whom have descended the most sturdy and conscientious citizens of America.
Early in infancy Benjamin was baptized in the faith of his ancestors, which faith helived and professed till the family located in Madison county, Iowa, when he united with the United Brethern church, and for many years he was the leading official member of that church, at Providence.
On leaving North Carolina, the Vierling family settled in the south part of the state and it as there that young Vierling enlisted in the service of his country in 1862. He was a member of the 36th Iowa Infantry, and had the record of being one of the most faithful and exemplary member of that historic company of veterans.
Sometime after the term of his enlistment, Mr. Vierling emigrated to Denver, Colorado, where he remained until he found it his duty to return to Iowa, and take care of his aged father and mother. Though he was physically debilitated by his hard military service, it was not till about a year ago that the evidences of his last fatal illness manifested themselves. The suffering of those years he bore with patience and fortitude.
He leaves a devoted and faithful wife, and five children. Anna, who is a teacher in the Minnesota schools, Mary, who lives in Pocahontas county, George, who is at Anita, Charles in New Mexico and Ernest at the old home, all of whom were present at the funeral. He also leaves a brother William, whose home is in the west.
The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. W. W. Williams, and were attended by a large concourse of neighbors and friends. The comrades of Pitzer Post, G.A.R. attended in a body, and performed their virtuous services at the interment. The funeral services and interment were at Union Chapel, where another member of the family was buried years ago.
