CHARLES G. SHELDON

Charles Gilbert Sheldon was born at Rupert, Benington county, Vermont, Jan. 13, 1840 and died at his home in Monroe township, Madison county, Iowa Sept, 8, 1918, aged 78 years, 7 months and 26 days.

In December, 1863, he was married to Miss Sarah M. Davidson. This union was blessed with eight children. The mother and three children: Joseph Wilson, Sarah Frances and Harry A., preceeded him in death.

Aug. 21, 1884, he was married to Mrs. Sallie Compton, who also died Aug. 4, 1889. There remain yet five children to mourn his departure: Hattie A., wife of Rev. G. B. Bancroft of Lincoln, Nebr.; Fannie E., wife of J. G. Alexander of Greeley, Colo.; Rose Emma, wife of R. W. Adcock; James Alvin and Lewis Arthur, all of Madison county, Iowa. There are also 31 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Brother Sheldon in early life was converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal church. Later he became a member of the evangelical association, of which he was a faithful exemplary member until his death. Aug. 21, 1861, he enlisted in Co. E, 5th Vermont Volunteer Infantry and served three years, participating in several engagements. After the close of the war, he was for some time employed by the government as carpenter on public works at Washington, D. C.

In 1876, he moved with his family to Monroe township, Madison county, Iowa, the present homestead, where he has since resided and during these 42 years he has never failed to march with his comrades on Decoration Day.

A prominent feature of his life was his cheerful self sacrifice for the welfare of others and his active liberal participation in church work and all benevolent causes.

The funeral services were held at the Bethany Evanagelical church. Rev. J. H. Yaggy of Des Moines, preached from the text Rev. 14:13, after which the remains were followed by a large procession to the Hamblin cemetery where they were tenderly laid to rest to await the resurrection morn. A short but very impressive service was conducted at the grave by several members of the G.A.R., with whom he has marched for several years.
