Wednesday, October 30, 1918Death of JAMES G. SHRIVER
James G. Shriver succumbed to pneumonia Wednesday evening, Oct. 23, 1918, after a critical illness lasting for days. Backed by a spendid constitution, a remarkable heart and every available medical aid, he made a valiant fight for life, but disease conquered. On Friday afternoon at three o'clock brief services were conducted by Rev. W. J. Stewart at the Winterset cemetery, where the Masonic order carried out its burial service.
Mr. Shriver, at the age of thirty seven, had attained success in the business world by means of unusual abilities. Those who knew him best remarked his unwavering, unswerving mind, which caused quick decision and excellent judgment in business affairs, deep loyalty to family and friends and devotion to his church. A man of few words and many good deeds, conservative but thoroughly reliable, he always "played the game." He delighted in out of door sports, hunting and fishing with men who found him an ideal sportsman. As a youth, he excelled in baseball and other athletic games. His clean, active life manifested its effect during his last illness when every ounce of strength was poured out against disease.
His passing at an early age, when he had well won a place for himsel in the business world, when the future held much for him, has brought sorrow to the town and "Jim" as he was generally called, will be greatly missed.
To Mrs. Ethel Shriver and his only son, John, he left an honorable name and the memory of an upright life.
Mr. Shriver was the youngest member of the family of the late Captain William R. & Martha (Forester) Shriver, and leaves one brother, Alvin B. Shriver of Los Angeles.
He held membership in the Presbyterian church, where he was a faithful and earnest official, always present at services, serving wherever duty called him.
